RODNEY KING — REST IN PEACE

26

June 18, 2012 by Eric Blumberg

I still can’t believe to this day that Rodney King’s Hyundai was doing 100 when he decided to put a halt to a screaming police chase and thus, ended up a bloody mess for his alleged crimes and misdemeanors.

That said, the man, whose treatment precipitated one of the darker periods in recet historical memory, was found dead by his girlfriend in his swimming pool Sunday. What are we to make of this man? What role was his in the final decade of the millenium?

Frankly, I’m not sure. Nonetheless, there may some solutions to this racially-tinged quadratic equation. Perhaps, King was responsible for just another example of how pissed off the African-American community can get when it feels marginalized by the Man; however why, in the course of its anger, residents insist on burning down their own neighborhood remains one of life’s great mysteries, at least to me.

The outcome of the first Rodney King trial, the one concerning criminal charges by several of the officers involved in his capture, made many folks feel disrespected and beaten down, once again. And let’s not forget the second most famous victim, Reginald Denny. He was also disrespected and quite literally beaten down — and out.

The other huge consideration in deciphering the meaning of the Rodney King incident and his influence as a player in the neverending tension between the races is his own personal life, which after the assault, really never amounted to more than a guy trying to get over a vicious beating that all the world would witness over and over. To his credit, he forgave those who were never criminally convicted. Let’s be honest, though, the incident no doubt left King with major PTSD, which no doubt led to his subsequent overreliance on alcohol. To is credit, again, he did embark on the treacherous road to recovery with all of its potential pitfalls.

All said and done, we will always remember his words: ” Can we all get along?”. I wonder if any of us thought to answer him at the time. We can remember the question now, though, and perhaps, it might be worth our while to grasping onto the thought that peace, love and understanding is not so funny after all.
